Canada Carbon Rebate deadline 2026: claim your Ontario payment before you lose it

If you slipped behind on your taxes during the side-hustle years, there is real money still available, but the clock is running. The Canada Carbon Rebate deadline in 2026 is 30 October 2026. After that date, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) pays no rebate on any return or adjustment you file, even for years you missed. For a lot of Oshawa and Whitby residents with unfiled 2021 to 2024 returns, that is up to about $1,800 that quietly disappears.

Key takeaways

  • The Canada Carbon Rebate deadline is 30 October 2026. File your 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2024 return after that date and the CRA pays no rebate for those years.
  • A single adult in Ontario with all four years unfiled can still claim about $1,570, and closer to $1,800 in a rural community like Uxbridge or Port Perry. Families claim more.
  • The rebate ended as a going program. The final Canada Carbon Rebate payment went out in April 2025, so this is strictly a catch-up claim on prior years.
  • You still have to file each missing year to get paid, even if you had no income and owe nothing. The CRA works out your eligibility automatically once each return is assessed.
  • This is one of several benefits you forfeit by not filing. Getting current before the deadline also unlocks the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and any refund you were owed.

What the Canada Carbon Rebate payment deadline in 2026 actually means

The Canada Carbon Rebate, formerly the Climate action incentive payment, was a refundable tax credit that offset the cost of the federal fuel charge, better known as the carbon tax. The Government of Canada removed the consumer carbon price on 1 April 2025, so the program is closed. The final payment landed in April 2025, and there are no more quarterly payments coming.

The rebate applied across Canada in provinces under the federal system, which includes Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Millions of Canadians received it as a tax credit each year.

Here is the part people miss. The rebate was always paid based on the tax return you filed for a given year. If you never filed for 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2024, the CRA never issued your rebate for those years. You can still file those returns and collect, which is a straightforward retroactive Canada Carbon Rebate claim. Those retroactive payments are real money.

The catch is the new cutoff. Under Budget 2025, the Income Tax Act was amended so that no rebate is paid on any tax return, or any adjustment request, filed after 30 October 2026. Miss that date and the door closes on those CCR unfiled returns for good. There is no late exception and no appeal that gets the rebate back.

Who can still claim the carbon rebate, and how much

You can still claim if you were eligible for the CCR and simply have not filed one or more of the applicable years. The applicable base years are 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Eligibility was simple. You generally had to be 19 or older, a resident of Ontario, and you had to file the income tax return for that year. If you and a spouse or common-law partner are both filing, only one of you receives the family amount, and it is the same either way.

The table below shows the Ontario amounts you would collect per unfiled year. The 2021 and 2022 base years paid over four quarters. The 2024 base year had a single payment in April 2025.

Base year (return you missed) Single adult Spouse or partner Per child under 19
2021 $373.00 $186.00 $93.00
2022 $488.00 $244.00 $122.00
2023 $560.00 $280.00 $140.00
2024 $151.00 $75.50 $37.75
All four years $1,572.00 $785.50 $392.75

Those figures are the base amounts. If you lived outside a large urban centre in a rural pocket of Durham such as Uxbridge or Port Perry, you also qualified for the rural supplement for small and rural communities. It added 10 per cent for the 2021 and 2022 base years, then increased from 10 per cent to 20 per cent in 2024. For a single rural adult that pushes the four-year total to roughly $1,800. To get it, you must tick the rural supplement box on page 2 of each return.

A Durham example: four unfiled returns, about $1,570 on the table

Marcus is a 27-year-old rideshare driver and part-time student in Oshawa. His income was low and irregular during the 2021 to 2024 stretch, and he assumed that because he owed nothing, filing did not matter. It did. Because he never filed those four returns, the CRA never sent him a single Canada Carbon Rebate payment.

Here is what Marcus is owed as a single adult in Oshawa, before any refund or other credit:

  • 2021 return: $373.00
  • 2022 return: $488.00
  • 2023 return: $560.00
  • 2024 return: $151.00
  • Total carbon rebate: $1,572.00

If Marcus files all four returns and they are assessed before 30 October 2026, the CRA issues the full $1,572, most likely by direct deposit. If he had lived in Port Perry and ticked the rural box, the total would climb past $1,700. If he waits until November, he gets nothing from the rebate for any of those years. Filing also puts his GST/HST credit and any other refund back in reach, so the real cheque is usually larger than the rebate alone.

How to file back taxes and claim the carbon rebate before the deadline

You do not need to do anything fancy. You need to file each missing return and let the CRA assess it. Work backwards from the filing deadline so an assessment delay does not cost you the money.

  1. Pull your slips for each missing year from CRA My Account. T4s, T4As and other slips from 2021 through 2024 are stored there, which makes filing old years far easier than people expect.
  2. File a separate return for each year you missed. Even a year with zero income needs its own return for the rebate to be paid.
  3. Tick the rural supplement box on page 2 of the return if you lived in a small or rural community.
  4. File electronically and enrol in direct deposit so the payment reaches you fast once the return is assessed.
  5. Give the CRA processing time. Aim to file weeks ahead of 30 October 2026, not on the day, because it is the assessment that has to be done, not just the filing.

If your records for those years are a mess, or you are not sure which years you actually missed, that is normal and fixable. Catching up several years of personal income tax returns and the bookkeeping behind them is exactly the kind of cleanup we handle every week.

FAQ

What is the Canada Carbon Rebate deadline in 2026?

The deadline is 30 October 2026. The CRA will not pay any Canada Carbon Rebate on a tax return or an adjustment request filed after that date, no matter which prior year it relates to. The program itself already closed, so filing before the cutoff is the only way to collect for 2021 through 2024.

Can I still get the carbon rebate if I never filed my 2021 to 2024 returns?

Yes. If you were eligible and simply never filed, you can still receive the rebate for each applicable tax year once that return is assessed. This is a retroactive claim on CCR unfiled returns, and it stays open only until 30 October 2026. File a separate return for every year you missed, and the CRA issues CCR payments after each one is assessed.

How much carbon rebate can I still claim in Ontario?

A single adult in Ontario with all four years unfiled can claim about $1,572, or closer to $1,800 in a rural community with the supplement. A couple and children add more on top. The exact amount depends on your family situation and which years you missed.

Do I still qualify if I had no income during those years?

Yes. The rebate did not depend on your income, so a year with no earnings still pays out. You do have to file a return for that year for the CRA to issue it, and you generally had to be 19 or older. Filing a nil return is quick and still triggers the payment.
