There is no shortage of accounting firms serving Whitby and Oshawa. The hard part is figuring out which one actually fits your business. This guide puts five Durham Region CPA firms side by side, so you can build a shortlist without driving to Toronto or reading forty tabs of marketing copy. And yes, we put ourselves on the list. Here is exactly how we built the comparison, so you can judge for yourself.

Every firm detail below was checked on 3 June 2026. We update this comparison quarterly.

Key takeaways

  • Five Durham Region CPA firms compared on verifiable facts, with a link to every firm, checked 3 June 2026.
  • Our top pick for small businesses and incorporated professionals is EK CPA Professional Accountants in Whitby.
  • Verify any firm in CPA Ontario's public directory before you hire.
  • Ontario's small business corporate income tax rate drops from 3.2% to 2.2% on 1 July 2026.

How we built this comparison

First, the disclosure. This guide is published by EK CPA Professional Accountants, a Whitby accounting firm, and we appear in it. So we held ourselves to a simple standard: every firm profiled here earned its place, every detail comes from the firm's own public website or a public registry and we link to each one so you can check.

What we looked at for each firm: where it is based, its service range, who it says it serves and what kind of client it suits best. We did not invent star ratings or rank anyone by "quality". Reviews change weekly and you should read them yourself on each firm's Google profile.

One step we recommend before paying anyone for CPA services: confirm the firm is registered in CPA Ontario's public directory. Anyone can call themselves an accountant in Ontario. Only a registered firm can call itself a CPA firm, and registration means oversight, professional standards and mandatory insurance.

Our top pick: EK CPA Professional Accountants (Whitby)

We will make the case for ourselves the same way we describe everyone else: with facts.

EK CPA Professional Accountants is a Whitby accounting firm at 70 Taunton Road East, led by Elena Kanter, a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CA) designated since 2009. Elena spent over 20 years in the profession, including time at Grant Thornton, one of Canada's largest accounting firms, and completed CPA Canada's three year In-Depth Tax Program, the most advanced tax training available to Canadian accountants. The full credentials are here.

The service range covers the full financial life of a business and its owner, from everyday tax needs to succession planning. Tax services cover personal taxes and corporate returns (T1 and T2), year round tax planning, salary and dividend mixes, HST filings, T4 and T5 slips and estate and trust returns (T3). Bookkeeping clients get monthly reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, payroll and cloud accounting setup. Year end work covers financial statements, sole proprietorship taxes and rental and investment income. Business consulting covers incorporation analysis, share structures, owner-manager compensation, cash flow, business growth and business planning. Incorporated professionals, including consultants, physicians and contractors, get the same depth on professional corporation planning. And if the CRA sends a letter, audit representation and dispute support are handled in house.

As a sole practitioner firm, the CPA who plans your compensation in November is the same person who files your T2 in April and answers the CRA letter in August. There is no junior rotation and no re-explaining your business every year. That continuity, backed by In-Depth trained tax expertise, is why EK CPA leads this list for businesses from Courtice to Uxbridge.

Clients meet in person in Whitby or work remotely from anywhere in Durham Region and across Canada. On Bark, the firm holds a 5 out of 5 rating across 134 hires as of June 2026, and the first step is easy: a free 30 minute consultation, no obligation.

Six Sigma Accounting (Ajax)

Six Sigma Accounting Professional Corporation is a CPA Ontario registered firm on Bayly Street in Ajax that provides accounting services to businesses and individuals across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Its service list runs from corporate and personal tax returns and filing through bookkeeping, cloud accounting, payroll processing and HST compliance to CFO and business advisory and CRA audit support, and it publishes a steady stream of technical guides on its site, along with a free initial consultation. A good fit if you want a team environment with CFO-style advisory layered on top of compliance work.

Dana Snedden CPA Professional Corporation (Oshawa)

Dana Snedden CPA is a chartered professional accounting firm in Oshawa. The firm focuses on small business accounting, personal and corporate income tax, bookkeeping and payroll. Its website emphasises keeping day to day books, payroll, financial reporting and year end work together. A good fit for owners who want their books and filings looked after from an Oshawa practice.

Afshan Ahmad CPA Professional Corporation (Oshawa)

Afshan Ahmad CPA describes itself as a virtual CPA firm with roots in Durham going back to 2001, registered with CPA Ontario at an Oshawa address. The firm serves small businesses, corporations, professionals and families through a secure, paperless workflow. A good fit if you are comfortable handling your accounting entirely online and like the idea of a long established Durham practice without visiting an office.

Stratking Accounting and Tax (Oshawa)

Stratking Accounting and Tax Professional Corporation positions itself as a full service CPA accounting firm for professionals and professional services firms, with an Oshawa presence serving the rest of Durham Region. Stratking's site targets incorporated professionals: consultants, physicians, IT contractors and similar practices. A good fit if your business is a professional corporation and you want a firm built around that niche.

How to choose an accounting firm in Durham Region

A shortlist of two or three firms beats typing "accountant near me" ten different ways. Here is the process we would give a friend.

Start with fit, not fees

Match the firm to your situation. A sole proprietor with a rental property, an incorporated consultant and a 30 employee company have different accounting needs. The best accounting firm for a small business is usually the one that works mostly with businesses your size, because the advice (and the fee) is calibrated to you.

The three fee models accountants use

Understand the three fee models before you compare quotes. Hourly billing suits one-off projects but makes costs unpredictable. Flat fees per filing work well for straightforward tax preparation, like personal income tax returns. Monthly retainers bundle bookkeeping, filings and advice, and usually make sense once you are incorporated with regular activity. None is "best". What matters is knowing what is included and what triggers an extra charge.

Eight questions for the intro call

Ask every firm on your shortlist the same eight questions:

  1. Are you taking new clients right now, and when would my file actually start?
  2. Who will work on my file day to day, you or a junior?
  3. Are you available year round, or mainly during tax season?
  4. How do you bill, and what is included before extra charges apply?
  5. What experience do you have with businesses like mine?
  6. Is your tax planning style conservative or aggressive?
  7. Which software do you work with, and can you use my QuickBooks file?
  8. If the CRA reviews my return, do you handle the response, and at what cost?

Watch for these red flags

Walk away from anyone who guarantees a specific refund, will not give you an engagement letter or gets vague when you ask what is included. Those are the three red flags that cost Durham business owners real money. We also keep a full guide on how to choose a CPA firm in Oshawa or Whitby, including the 2026 deadlines to plan around.

Tax season timing for small business owners in 2026

Two dates make summer 2026 the right time to sort this out rather than waiting for tax season.

The first is 15 June 2026, the CRA tax filing deadline for self-employed individuals. If that date just caused you stress, that is your signal: firms across Oshawa and Durham get selective near deadlines, and many cap new client intake entirely between February and April. The owners who start the search in summer get their pick. The ones who call in March get waitlists.

The second is 1 July 2026, when Ontario's small business corporate income tax rate drops from 3.2% to 2.2%. Combined with the 9% federal small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, Durham corporations will pay 11.2% instead of 12.2%. For a Whitby corporation with a 31 December year end earning $200,000 of active business income, that is roughly $1,000 in tax savings for 2026 (the 1% cut applied to about half the year) and about $2,000 every year after.

A thousand dollars will not change your life. The pattern should. Rate changes, deadline shifts and new credits land every single year, and the difference between an accountant who flags them in June and one who summarises them next April compounds. It is the same reason so many owners miss deductions they were always entitled to claim: nobody was watching their file between filings.

If your shortlist includes us, the next step is simple. At EK CPA Pro we work with business owners and incorporated professionals across Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Bowmanville and Uxbridge, in person or remotely. Book a free 30 minute consultation and bring your questions, including the eight above. You will get straight answers and a clear next step before the call ends.
